I used this in conjunction with a garden fence. With the fence as a visible boundary, training was not needed. My dog figured out really quick what the beep meant. Set up was easy. As a tip, the border settings are for the full diameter from the wire. The beep occurs in the first 20 percent of the distance, then you get the shock. For example, if you set it at 10, that effectively means five feet on either side of the wire (or above, below, etc). The beep will occur for 1 foot, then the shock will happen for the remaining 4 feet, getting stronger as you get closer. So, if you are doing a double loop design (which I did on the fence), you can actually put the wires closer than 5 feet if you adjust the boundary accordingly. Cool product. If it doesn't work, you can go up to the "Stubborn Dog" collar, which delivers quite a wallop. FYI, with this model, if you dog gets out, they will get shocked if they try and get back in.
